It looks like the DriveClub franchise is far from dead, despite the closure of Evolution Studios , following word that Driveclub VR will be among the many PlayStation VR launch games available when the virtual reality headset hits Japanese retailers in October. But we’re still waiting for Sony to confirm it will release the upcoming Driveclub port in Western markets.
Word of Driveclub VR arrives courtesy of a Sony Japan blog post , published (and quickly pulled) Friday morning. There wasn’t much information on the upcoming Driveclub port, other than confirmation of virtual reality support and a few screenshots , but even that little bit of news should excite anyone hoping to see more of the seemingly short-lived driving series. Driveclub VR will even include new tracks , according to former Driveclub game director Paul Rustchynsky, not seen in the base game or the recently released GOTY edition.
Strangely, it’s not clear when development of Driveclub VR took place. The former Driveclub director didn’t hesitate to confirm the existence of a virtual reality port, or the presence of new tracks, but Rustchynsky initially said he couldn’t offer any information on the team behind the port. Later, he hopped on NeoGAF to say “The same development team who made Driveclub, also made Driveclub VR.” Presumably, that means the bulk of the development work concluded before the original team was dismissed by Evolution. But we’re hoping someone out there has been working on additional bug fixes and performance tweaks in the interim.
Driveclub VR is in development exclusively for PlayStation VR. The game will hit Japanese stores alongside Sony’s virtual reality headset on Oct. 13. There’s no word on a Western launch.
