Fallout 4 will soon have mods on PS4, but the feature’s release has been delayed until after the debut of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition on Oct. 28. Bethesda’s Pete Hines recently explained the late arrival and revealed how Sony’s console will be slightly limited compared to the norm on Xbox One and PC.
During the weeks of Bethesda’s feud with Sony, Hines revealed that PS4 mods for Fallout 4 were essentially complete prior to being scrapped. If that’s the reality, why can’t the feature be added sooner since the wounds have healed? To that question, Hines recently said the team has to “prepare a whole new update [and] test for all, languages” before release. The previous patch had mods functioning identical to Xbox One and PC. “PS4 will work differently,” he qualified.
That much was made clear when Bethesda first revealed its intentions last week. “You will not be able to upload external assets with your PlayStation 4 mods,” the source post announced. Wednesday, Hines went a little deeper on the matter. He explained that “anything that only uses/reuses assets from the game or DLC” should function properly. The official Creation Kit, available here, contains every eligible object. In other words, simple settlement changes should work, but importing John Cena’s likeness or audio clips will not.
Fallout 4 PS4 mods were once expected to release as soon as June, but Sony and Bethesda remained silent as deliberation and testing continued. After months of unsuccessful debate, the developer intended to scrap the idea entirely while looking for an alternative. An agreement for mod implementation was reached last week.
Until the update formally releases, it’s hard to know precisely how worthwhile the shackled PS4 mod experience will be. It seems like players will have plenty of room for creativity in creation, but we’d be hard pressed to call it total freedom.
Fallout 4 is available now on PS4, Xbox One and PC. Mods are only available on the later two platforms at this time.
