Fallout 4 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition have been updated for Xbox One X, and they’ve got some great 4K enhancements to check out on the new console. According to the latest blog post on the subject, here are all the big features coming to each game.
Fallout 4
- 4K resolution
- Dynamic resolution
- Enhanced draw distance for trees, grass, objects and NPCs
- Enhanced God Ray effects
Skyrim Special Edition
- 4K resolution
- Dynamic resolution
With regard to how that stacks up against PS4 Pro, the Skyrim patch appears to essentially offer the same. It’s one of the only titles to support native 4K on Sony’s top-tier console so the dynamic resolution could push things beyond 4K on the X, but that likely won’t happen in most heavy-effect areas.
As for Fallout 4, the advantage is similar to what we’ve seen from other Bethesda titles since the Xbox One X’s release. Both Pro and X offer dynamically scaled resolutions well beyond 1080p, but the peaks for both consoles differ. While PS4 Pro tops out around 1440p, the Xbox One X version will shoot much closer to 4K and might hit that target during less turbulent scenes. The only possible downside with that higher base resolution is scaling may happen more frequently on the X.
As for framerate, Bethesda’s past work would tell us the dynamically scaling mode will shoot as close to 60fps as humanly possible. Since the experience in both cases isn’t quite as demanding as something like Wolfenstein 2, we’d guess maintaining that threshold should work out most of the time.
The short story here is that Fallout 4 and Skyrim are now fully optimized to take advantage of Xbox One X. As far as consoles are concerned, Xbox One X should be the best place to play once the patch is installed.
Fallout 4 and Skyrim Special Edition are available now on Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
