Fortnite developer Epic Games is taking its fight against Apple up a notch with a new event. That’s right, there’s going to be a new tournament dubbed as the #FreeFortnite Cup, which is going to be held this Sunday, August 23. Those who join get a chance to win a lot of exciting rewards.
The Case at Hand
Before we go into the details of this upcoming tournament, let’s help you get some context. It all started when Epic Games launched its Fortnite Mega Drop, which offered players are much as 20% discounts on in-game items and V-bucks. Learn more about that offer here.
While there was no issue when it came to the PC and consoles, Epic had other plans for the mobile version. The developer came up with its own payment system in order to avoid the additional fees imposed by Apple and Google's app stores.
This resulted in Apple blocking Fortnite from the iOS App Store. In return, Epic filed a suit and even released a parody video. In the suit Epic claimed that the policies on the iOS App Store are unreasonable, unlawful, and anti-competitive. Read more on that here.
Google has also removed Fortnite from its platform and Epic has filed a corresponding suit. However, there are differences considering Google Play also works differently as it allows developers to have their own storefronts on Android.
Tournament Details
So how does the tournament work? For starters, it’s going to be available across all platforms. Then for four hours, eligible players get the chance to win prizes by taking part in a maximum of 12 matches as a Solo player. Scoring follows these rules:

What about the rewards? Players, no matter where they are, that manage to get 10 points get the delicious Tart Tycoon Outfit. The top scoring players across regions, likely around 20,000 globally, get the #FreeFortnite adjustable hat. Unlike the Tart Tycoon Outfit, this hat is a physical real-world item that is going to be shipped to the homes of to those who qualify.
Not satisfied? Well, there’s also going to be 1,200 pieces of gaming hardware to be given away. According to the Fortnite team in a post, even if players won’t be able to “play on iOS doesn’t mean there aren’t other awesome places to play Fortnite.” There’s going to be 1,200 “apple-eaters globally” that get the chance to win one of these prizes:
- Alienware Gaming Laptop
- Samsung Galaxy Tab S7
- OnePlus 8 – 90FPS on a phone
