Fox has announced New Mutants arrives in theaters on April 13, 2018. Deadpool 2 is officially set for June 1, 2018. Then, X-Men: The Dark Phoenix will land in theaters on Nov. 2, 2018.
After X-Men: Apocalypse didn’t live up to expectations for longtime fans of the franchise, the prospect of the next big X-Men movie, The Dark Phoenix, is a scary one. Jean Grey’s storyline will be explored yet again, which we’ve already seen in X-Men: The Last Stand, probably the most poorly received X-Men movie ever. Days of Future Past , however, aimed to make that epic fail irrelevant. As seen in Apocalypse, a younger Sophie Turner is now Jean Grey and she must learn to cope with her formidable yet extremely dangerous abilities.
Before Dark Phoenix revisits the Jean Grey situation, we’ll be treated to two films in the X-Men universe that don’t have so much at stake. Imagined as a trilogy with a YA tone, according to Josh Boone, New Mutants will bring in a bunch of young, new faces: Warlock, Magik, Sunspot, Cannonball, Mirage and Wolfsbane. Read about each character here. The villain is rumored to be Demon Bear.
As for Deadpool 2, you can expect the same raunchy humor as the first. But this time around, Deadpool has some new friendly foes: Cable and Domino. Josh Brolin has been cast as Cable and Atlanta’ s Zazie Beetz as Domino. Brolin reportedly signed a four-film deal with Fox, which makes sense considering Cable’s a founding member of X-Force and New Mutants and can easily slip into X-Men storylines because of his rich and diverse comic book history.
Hopefully, Fox can hang onto the positive momentum prompted by Logan and Legion . Hugh Jackman’s last time as Wolverine was one of the best X-Men films to date. Legion , which explores the backstory of Professor X’s son, premiered on FX this year to extremely positive reviews. Writers James Mangold and Fargo creator Noah Hawley both brought a distinct tone to their respective projects that the X-Men franchise should take note of. Neither Logan or Legion follow the traditional ‘superhero’ formula that Marvel does so well.
As exciting as these release date announcements are, Fox appears to be leaving the X-Force movie behind for now, which Ryan Reynolds once called a “huge priority” and is rumored to be co-writing alongside Joe Carnahan. Also in the dust is Gambit, a film starring Channing Tatum which has been shelved every year since 2014.
