Donald Glover’s new show on FX looks extremely promising. What is Atlanta about? Glover plays Princeton dropout Earnest ‘Earn’ Marks, who has moved home to Atlanta and now works at the airport. He stays with the mother of his baby, though their relationship is complicated since she’s seeing other people. Earn learns that his cousin, Alfred aka Paper Boi, just released a hot mixtape, so he tries to become his manager.

So far we’ve had a handful of quick, funny teasers. However, the latest four-minute extended trailer reveals the series has another tone. Take a look.

Atlanta appears to explore Earn’s existential crisis: how to take care of his family, be happy and achieve something greater. The extended trailer proves not only Glover shines, but that his co-stars Keith Stanfield (who plays Darius) and Brian Tyree Henry (who plays Alfred) have stories of their own. While undoubtedly unconventional, the organic plot is a breath of fresh air--a dramatic comedy that cleverly examines adversity without shoving it in your face.

“The No. 1 thing we kept coming back to is that it needs to be funny first and foremost. I never wanted this shit to be important,” said Glover in a recent profile in New York. “I never wanted this show to be about diversity; all that shit is wack to me. There’s a lot of clapter going on.”

Atlanta premieres Sept. 6 on FX.
