One of the bigger announcements made during Gamescom didn’t come with huge fanfare, or even a trailer. It’s huge because of its implications, as two of the biggest names in gaming are starting to enter into the next generation of consoles. In an official press release, Sony Interactive Entertainment, better known as the company behind PlayStation, has announced that they have acquired Insomniac Games.
Insomniac Games has always had a history with Sony Interactive Entertainment, having developed PlayStation exclusives for much of its lifespan – Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank and Resistance were all Sony IPs developed by the studio, in addition to the recently released and critically-acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man. In a way, this announcement came as a surprise to a lot of players on the platform, mostly because of the assumption that Insomniac was already under the Sony banner to begin with.
“Insomniac Games is one of the most highly-acclaimed development studios in the industry and their legacy of best-in class storytelling and gameplay is unparalleled,” Shawn Layden, Chairman of SIE Worldwide Studios, said in a press release. “We have enjoyed a strong collaborative partnership with the studio for many years, and are thrilled to officially welcome them to the Worldwide Studios family. The addition of Insomniac Games to SIE WWS reiterates our commitment to developing world class gaming experiences that can only be found on the PlayStation platform.”
