At last, Lena Dunham’s emmy-winning series, Girls, is coming to an end. The news was officially confirmed by HBO on Wednesday following newly surfaced reports published by E! on Tuesday.
“I can’t imagine a more fulfilling creative experience than Girls,” said Dunham in a statement. “The freedom and support that HBO has given Jenni [Konner], Judd, and me is something rare and beautiful. The commitment and originality of our actors has been stunning, and our crew is truly my family.
“I conceived of Girls when I was 23 and now I’m nearly 30 — the show has quite perfectly spanned my 20s, the period of time that it’s about — and so it feels like the right time to wrap our story up. We look forward to creating a sixth season that will honor our amazing cast, crew and fans. And in the Girls universe, nothing ever ends too neatly.”
Speculation had been growing that the Girls’ time in Brooklyn would be coming to an end after Dunham teased the possibility to radio host Elvin Duran back in September. One must keep in mind, however, that Girls season 5 has yet to premiere – meaning the HBO series should conclude sometime in 2017.
Dunham promised fans that the latest season of the dramedy would give viewers the opportunity to “see that the girls are heading to … not a conclusion in their life, but this period of their life,” as per EW. “… It’s always been important to us that we know and understand when it’s time to wrap it up,” she added. “It is about a very specific time in life and we don’t want to push past that or overextend it. We’re going to feel it out.”
It will be interesting to see how Hannah Horvath and the rest of the gang head into their thirties with the conclusion of the landmark series. Until then, enjoy the show while you can – Girls season 5 premieres Feb. 21 at 10 p.m. ET on HBO.
