While the release of the Epic Games Store was hailed by some as something that will infuse new lifeblood into the PC gaming industry, its arrival shortly after was much more derisively received. The giant company behind the battle royal sensation Fortnite is showing a habit of buying out exclusivity rights for PC titles, a move that was met mostly with disgust and distrust from PC gamers at large, as it’s ultimately robbing them of consumer choice.
Most players on the PC platform aren’t really fond of the way exclusivity works, especially since playing these titles forces one to go to the Epic Games Launcher, a games launcher with glaring issues and problems, without even mentioning the supposed spyware loaded into it.
It’s not the biggest problem to speak of, but if we’re going off on convenience, most people would just love to have their games on one launcher. Well, it looks like the Good Old Games Store is listening to these pleas, as it now tries its hand at something no other third-party company has done: bringing the community together as one.
With that in mind, GOG has announced its latest venture, GOG Galaxy 2.0. This is a launcher that will organize all the other games from your other launchers into one, eliminating the need for opening and rifling through all of them. Best of all, it also connects you with your friends on other launchers, as well as other platforms including consoles, allowing you to communicate with them in one place.
“As gamers, we need to juggle between multiple clients to access our games and see what our friends are playing,” Piotr Karwowski, a Managing Director at GOG, said in a press statement. “We believe gamers deserve a better experience, and this became the driving force to redefine the GOG Galaxy client. GOG Galaxy 2.0 is designed for all gamers and extends well beyond existing GOG.COM users, into both PC and console platforms.”
GOG Galaxy 2.0 will, in essence, connect all of your other platforms together into one seamless launcher. It will track all of your achievements in one place, as well as hours played, and games owned.
GOG Galaxy 2.0 is set to release for both the Windows and Mac for free in the near future. However, you can opt into the closed beta now by checking it out here.
