Every year the Grammy Awards honor the best and brightest stars in the music industry. Music’s biggest night celebrates these artists through a variety of prizes and special performances. Winners like Kendrick Lamar and Taylor Swift take modest delight in their crowning achievements, and their popularity and legacy grow with each golden Gramophone. But what musicians often fail to mention is the economic impact of winning a Grammy.
In a modern world of streaming royalties and diminished album purchases, artists rely on ticket sales to fuel their creative ambitions more than ever. The ability to sell out concerts and go on annual tours is vital to a musician’s ability to thrive and earn a living. For the lucky few that go on to win Grammys, there is a direct correlation between trophy wins and music sales. It’s called “The Grammy Effect,” and it impacts both album and ticket sales.
A Nielsen report from the 2015 Grammys states: “ Illustrating the effect of a GRAMMY win for an artist who likely wasn’t as well-known as Beyoncé, digital sales of Beck’s Heart Is a Drum skyrocketed—increasing more than 35,000% on the day of the event and the next day compared with the same two days in the prior week. His social media following grew as well, with his number of new Facebook likes increasing over 360% and Twitter followers growing 689% from the week prior.” And that’s just one example. The Grammy Effect can have massive implications on concert sales as well.
