The results are in and the Game of the Year goes to Hades . Not that surprising considering after it was launched in September 2020, it received universal acclaim and even grabbed wins in different awards shows. In the Gayming Awards 2021, the game beat out the likes of Animal Crossing, Final Fantasy VII Remake, and Tell Me Why. Hades didn’t go home with just a single award since it also received the Gayming Magazine Readers’ Award.
The Gayming Awards is the first event that celebrates the achievements of the gaming industry and how they champion the cause of the LGBTQ community. Gayming Magazine founder and editor Robin Gray shared that the event was truly a milestone as it was the first-ever LGBTQ video game award show. Gray added that 2020 was indeed historic for the LGBTQ community, especially in video games.
Colin Blackwood of EA said that they are more than happy to be part of the inaugural Gayming Awards and hope that this becomes an annual event.
Hades wasn’t the only game that went home with two awards. The game If Found… grabbed the Best LGBTQ Indie Game Award and Best LGBTQ Narrative Award. For those not familiar, If Found… is a visual novel released on PC and Nintendo Switch. It follows two interleaved stories with one focusing on a space explorer named Cassiopeia and the other on a young transgender woman named Kasio.
Tell Me Why also took home two awards: the Authentic Representation Award and Best LGBTQ Character Award for Tyler Ronan. The game is a narrative adventure game and released in three episodes on Xbox One and PC.
Other winners include DEERE that received the LGBTQ Streamer of the Year Award. Then, there’s the Industry Diversity Award handed to I Need Diverse Games.
Finally, the Gayming Icon Award was awarded to Robert Yang. This was actually announced last month with Yang stating that when it comes to video games, his goal has always been to dig deeper into gay and queer sexuality. Yang is an indie developer and has released games like Intimate, Infinite, and Cobra Club .
