Halo Infinite is a launch title for Microsoft’s next-gen console, Xbox Series X. However, it was also made for PC and the current-gen Xbox One. Many fans have been thinking that the decision to release Infinite on the older Xbox might hold it back, graphics wise.
343 Industries Studio Head Chris Lee said in an interview with GameSpot that Infinite won’t be held back thanks to the new SlipSpace Engine. "When we started building Halo Infinite we knew we had to really invest in our technology to achieve the ambition that the vision of this game had. So we invested a lot in our SlipSpace Engine," Lee said during the interview. "We've been developing it over time with the idea and the concept of being cross-platform so we could support the Xbox One family of devices, the Xbox Series X, and of course, PC when we release on Steam as well."
Lee also claimed that the game was developed for all the mentioned devices simultaneously, and that 343 will take full advantage of the hardware. "From the very beginning we wanted to make sure we were developing all of these experiences in parallel and had the right technology to power those experiences and optimize them for each device," Lee further added in the interview.
343 Industries' decision to release Infinite on older consoles is completely opposite of the PlayStation approach. Sony will now release their exclusive games for PS5 only. Sony claimed that they want to make new experiences that will take full advantage of the next-gen hardware, which will not be held back by the previous console. That’s why Sony's upcoming exclusive games Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Horizon: The Forbidden West are not coming to PlayStation 4.
For Microsoft, they plan to release their exclusive titles for both current and next-gen console for the next couple of years to make the transition easier. As of now, Sony’s approach seems to be more popular.
Halo Infinite received some major criticism from several fans that complained about the game’s seemingly outdated graphics and, to be honest, we can understand where these critiques are coming from. The gameplay video released last week did little to awe us, especially compared to what Sony showed off during their PS5 showcase.
