Either John Cena is a huge fan of Geoff Johns and Gary Frank’s Watchmen-inspired series Doomsday Clock, or he’s teasing an upcoming role in HBO’s adaptation of the comic book series.
Cena first posted the Watchmen logo (The Comedian’s smiley face badge with a drip of blood) to his Instagram Nov. 19, just before the first issue of Doomsday Clock arrived on Nov. 22. Most of us were able to write that off. If he’s a comic book fan, Watchmen merging with the DC Universe is one of the biggest events in recent history…and who doesn’t love Watchmen? Born in the late 70’s, Cena could be just a huge fan. But it’s the second post that got us thinking Cena could have a role in HBO’s live-action adaptation. He recently posted a piece of Doctor Manhattan fan art and the comments section went wild.
Doctor Manhattan would be a huge role for anyone, let alone a relatively inexperienced actor like Cena. He’s shown his comedic chops in films like Trainwreck, but Doctor Manhattan is on another level, and it’s hard to picture him pulling off some of the more serious aspects of the character. Sure, Cena would look great naked and has the perfect body for the role, but the casting would be very odd. From what we’ve seen, his talents may be better served as The Comedian.
It’s also possible Cena is just trolling. He could actually be cast as The Comedian and posting these Doctor Manhattan photos to mislead fans. Either way, the prospect of Cena in Watchmen is quite exciting. Would you be happy with Cena as Doctor Manhattan or The Comedian? Let us know in the comments. Watchmen has no release date.
Watchmen was created by Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons in 1986. The graphic novel was previously turned into a film by Zack Snyder. Damon Lindelof (Lost) will adapt the book for HBO.
