CES officially starts tomorrow in Las Vegas, but HTC couldn't wait to spread the word about its newest VR itieration - the Vive Pre. Announced earlier today, the Vive Pre is being marketed as the "next generation" of VR headsets, and sports a host of new features designed to make the VR experience more immersive and more comfortable.
The most significant change coming with the Vive Pre is the introduction of a front-facing camera. This will allow users to integrate the real world into the virtual one. How will this be useful? In a practical sense, it will allow users to grab a drink or find a chair without having to take off the headset. Other applcations of this hardware have been teased by HTC, but there have been no specific mentions of what else is possible.
The rest of the Vive Pre is pretty much just redesigns. The headset has been made more compact, and interchangeable foam inserts allow for users to find a perfect fit for their needs. Brighter displays are also now included to improve picture quality. According to the HTC press release these "image refinements lead to increased clarity, and an even deeper sense of presence."
The controller has been overhauled as well, featuring textured buttons and grip pads to make things feel more comfortable. Haptic feedback in the triggers helps the user feel even more immersed in whatever game they may be playing. The controller has also been upgraded to include lithium polymer batteries to allow for micro-USB recharging.
The Vive Pre will be compatible with SteamVR, the VR software coming from game developer Valve. SteamVR will be the most integrated VR solution for Steam and SteamOS. The Vive Pre will also have other applications outside of gaming, with partnerships with companies like Audi and Dassault Systemes being confirmed already.
The HTC Vive is scheduled for a full release this April. No specific date or price has been revealed at this time.
