Analysts from Cowen and Company are corroborating a rumor sent in anonymously to 9to5Mac that claims the iPhone 7 will not have the same home button as currently seen on the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus.
Instead of a physical home button, the iPhone 7 allegedly features Force Touch technology that not only sit flush with the iPhone’s body, but also uses haptic feedback to provide the sensation of clicking something.
Force Touch was first unveiled with the Apple Watch, with an evolution of the technology being introduced with the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus as 3D Touch.
So far, 3D Touch on the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus has been mostly used to provide a sort of right click functionality, with shortcuts popping up if 3D Touch is used on a specific app.
A “Force Touch Home button,” as the Cowen and Company analysts are calling it, would no doubt look or feel very similar to the current trackpads used on the 12-inch Macbooks. Even though the trackpad “button” doesn’t actually move, the haptic feedback provides the correct sensation to make it seem like it did.
