Alas, Jessica Jones season 2 is official. Netflix announced the Marvel series will continue on for another season via Facebook and Twitter.
Dialing the posted phone number will direct you to Jessica Jones’ answering machine which says, “Alias Investigations. We’ve got cases and shit so leave a message.”
Netflix and The Marvel Universe have a lot of plot decisions to make. With Daredevil season 2 set to premiere March 18, The Punisher reportedly getting his own series, Iron Fist and Luke Cage shows in the works, and now Jessica Jones for a second season, each standalone series will be unpredictable. Could all of these Marvel characters appear in one episode at the same time?
Likely not all of them. If they do end up in the same room, I imagine there will be a lot of broken furniture. Keep in mind Netflix does have a master plan for a series called, The Defenders, which will feature Jessica Jones, Iron First, Daredevil and Luke Cage. However, rumors have it that the show will begin after each complete their own individual series. Jessica Jones does not appear as a Defender in the comics. But to be fair, none of the characters listed above were members of the original Marvel Defenders.
Marvel’s Head of Television Jeph Loeb explained in an interview with Cinema Blend that the merging of storylines will be subtle and organic. “Sometimes it may be a very subtle thing, like they go to the same hospital, because they’re in the same neighborhood. That is a very organic way of doing it… It may be in a very unexpected way. You may go, ‘Oh, I know that cop! That’s the same cop that’s in this one,' and that should feel very much like it’s in that world.”
Apparently Marvel and Netflix aren’t overwhelmed yet. According to EW, the two media powerhouses may be ready for even more on their plate with the rumored Punisher series. Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos said, “any character that’s in there is on the table … It’s always possible. All the characters in the universe could also spin out.” But all of this takes time, Sarandos adds. “Right now, these are produced at the scale of a major film, so there are long production times and long post times. In some case, when we have character crossover, it makes it more difficult to manage production. It’s not the goal to put out more than one or two out a year.”
At this point, it’s unclear how many seasons of Jessica Jones and Daredevil will stream before more details surface about The Defenders. “The Defenders production schedule will determine the production schedule of second and third seasons. It’s a work in progress,” Serrando adds.
There is no release date or news on casting for Iron First. Jessica Jones has no official release date but “Coming Soon” implies a 2016 release. Luke Cage is rumored to premiere fall 2016. Daredevil season 2 is right around the corner, available to stream on Netflix March. 18.
