Kanye West has partially reneged on his promise that his latest album, The Life of Pablo, would only be available on Tidal. ‘Famous,’ the popular song featuring Rihanna and a highly controversial lyric about Taylor Swift, was released on Spotify and Apple Music. No other tracks from TLOP are available on the streaming services as of now.
Last month, Ye tweeted that “You can only get [The Life of Pablo] on Tidal.” Since the album’s initial release in February, the rapper-producer has promoted the streaming service founded by his friend and collaborator, Jay-Z. To counter opposition in a crowded market, Tidal has exclusively released a variety of content from Beyonce, Rihanna, The White Stripes, Daft Punk and more.
The lure of Spotify and Apple Music’s massive user bases may be too tempting for Kanye to resist, however. In January, Apple Music passed over 10 million subscribers in just six months of service. Spotify, on the other hand, reached 30 million users in March. Tidal, meanwhile, has somewhere around 2.5 million - and that number was taken after The Life of Pablo’s release doubled Tidal’s subscription count.
By now, everyone knows that Yeezy is a huge egomaniac, so it wouldn’t be much of a surprise if he wanted to increase his amount of listeners. As for the full release of The Life of Pablo on Spotify and Tidal, the future remains uncertain. Mashable reached out to a representative from Spotify, who “did not have any information regarding the availability of the rest of the album.”
