NBC Sports and NextVR have come together to offer a virtual reality broadcast of the Kentucky Derby this Saturday at 4 p.m. To watch the horse racing live, you will need a Samsung Gear VR headset and a Gear compatible Samsung phone, like the Samsung Galaxy S6 or the Samsung Galaxy S7.
If you happen to have both of those, put your phone into the Samsung Gear VR headset and open up Oculus Home. Navigate to the app store and download the NextVR app. Once it’s installed, simply tune in at broadcast time to watch the Kentucky Derby live.
The NextVR app has a dedicated FOX sports channel available to be watched as well, with VR content from the International Champions Cup and the NBA. NextVR specializes in transmitting live virtual reality broadcasts over the internet.
NextVR is currently only available with the Samsung Gear VR headset, meaning there is no iPhone or legacy Android support with a Google Cardboard device. This is because the Gear has extra hardware attached to it, including a touchpad, a button and an inertial measurement unit for rotational tracking. This allows the Gear a level of performance other smartphone virtual reality setups lack.
