The PlayStation 5 is already in the middle of its life cycle as evidenced by the PS5 Pro's release last year, and many fans' eyes are now looking at Sony for any next-gen development.

However, it was not Sony who broke the silence regarding the speculated PlayStation 6 as AMD made announcements that are said to be a teaser for the successor console.

It all boils down to the so-called "Project Amethyst," which Sony previously confirmed to be the collaboration it has with AMD.

AMD Shares a PlayStation 6 Teaser This Radeon Day

AMD shared a new post via X as part of its massive celebration of the so-called "Radeon Day," with the company sharing a special shoutout to PlayStation about the work they are doing for Project Amethyst.

While the company did not reveal much about their collaboration, it involves the upcoming PlayStation 6.

ComicBook Gaming reported that while there is no exact confirmation from either Sony or AMD regarding the PlayStation 6, it was previously revealed that the Project Amethyst will focus on improving in-game visuals for the future.

As revealed by AMD in its post, their current work is only the beginning of a larger project between the two, and it is speculated to be the new PlayStation.

According to AMD's post, the Radeon-powered FSR 4 is already "looking fantastic." The FSR 4 technology is seen as the next wave of AI-enhanced upscaling that is rumored for video games. This has not been confirmed by AMD or Sony.

Sony and AMD's 'Project Amethyst': Is It for the PS6?

Sony and AMD have never confirmed that all their work is aimed towards the development of the PlayStation 6, but their previous partnerships resulted the PlayStation 5 getting AMD's processing power and GPU. Moreover, Project Amethyst remains a project that focuses on upscaling technology using the Radeon graphics card by AMD, but it was not explicitly referred to as the PS6.

However, while Project Amethyst is not the PS6, the technology is expected to bring significant improvements to the future of Sony's gaming experiences, including the next PlayStation. We are still years away before the next generation of Sony's console arrives, especially as the PS5 only reached its mid-cycle recently.

Many expect that Sony will follow the same seven-year gap between the PlayStation 5 and the PlayStation 6, similar to the timeline between the PS4 and PS5, which means that the earliest it will arrive will be by 2027.
