Kingdom Hearts 3 news has been light for quite some time, so we thought we’d offer a small PSA about the next round of reveals. An interview with Dengeki PlayStation from June and some hot scoops from Jump Festa offer the most insight possible.
Starting with Kingdom Hearts 3, game director Tetsuya Nomura had this to say in reference to the tease at the end of the Kingdom Hearts 2.8 E3 trailer that promised more details this winter.
“After I've gotten it across that the position of the content in KH2.8 is important, I think I will report new information on KH3 along with the release of KH2.8.” The release date of Kingdom Hearts 2.8 is currently slated for Jan. 12. That date is, of course, conveniently situated in the middle of winter. It’s not clear if the Kingdom Hearts 3 developments will arrive day and date with its predecessor, but there’s definitely intent to keep both events close.
For those who can’t wait that long, however, two Kingdom Hearts trailers are planned to debut during Jump Festa 2017 on Dec. 17. The yearly anime convention is a big deal in Japan, and Square Enix has confirmed that Sora and pals will be there. The showcase, however, won’t focus on the third main installment. Instead, we’ll see fresh trailers for Kingdom Hearts 2.8 and the 1.5+2.5 HD remaster collection set to release in March. It’s important to note that 2.8 does feature a small chunk of new content, so there could be interesting stuff to behold regardless.
As for Kingdom Hearts 3, it’s officially the main title in development at Square Enix Japan since the release of Final Fantasy 15. Despite being announced in 2013, we still don’t have a release date yet. We’ve seen world concepts from Tangled , Hercules , Big Hero 6 and a few franchise-specific locales, but there’s still a lot to learn about Sora’s next adventure.
Kingdom Hearts 3 is available to pre-order for PS4 and Xbox One.
