SYFY’s investment in production paid off with its latest originals The Expanse and The Magicians , both well received by fans. However, for some reason, DC Comics readers seem lukewarm about Krypton even though the new trailer looks amazing.
DC plans to take Kryptonian mythology to another level with the series, set to debut on an unspecified date next year. The city of Krypton, 200 years in the past, will come to life in a way never before seen on-screen. See the shot of the city about ten seconds into the teaser? It’s dark, tinted red and dense.
Superman’s grandfather and Jor-El’s father, Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe), is the House Of El’s only hope. The series gets even more intense, Geoff Johns explained during the Krypton panel at San Diego Comic Con.
The DC Comics creative officer revealed Krypton’ s ambitious set of villains include Brainiac and Doomsday. The timeline is intricate, with Adam Strange traveling into the past to try and stop the evil forces from the present day from destroying Superman’s legacy.
“One of the main big villains you saw in there, it’s so cool to have Brainiac. Long overdue to be on-screen like that,” Johns continued. “Oops, did we say Doomsday? Yeah, Doomsday will be in the show.”
Producer Cameron Welsh explained the team chose Adam Strange because he’s in the space corner of the DC Universe.
“He feels like a natural fit. Our version is interesting. He’s a bit more cynical. The connection with Thanagar is going to be important. Having both Adam Strange and Hawkwoman... and knowing the history," he said.
Johns confirmed the series will take place in it’s own universe, and even shared a piece of Adam Strange dialogue to get fans hyped.
“This guy shows up to Seg and says, ‘Look, I’m from a planet called Earth. My name is Adam Strange. I come from a time long after this, and I need you to help me save your grandson.’”
The series will also explore hidden romance. Seg has a relationship with a member of the House Of Zod -- Lyta, played by Georgina Campbell. Johns also confirmed we’ll see Black Mercy in the pilot, which implies Mongul’s presence, as well as the Kryptonian version of Nightwing and Flamebird.
“That’s a huge part of the canon, so I don't know how we can’t do that,” Johns said.
The teaser shown at SDCC was the same length as the one released today, but showed slightly different footage. Check it out below and stay tuned for a release date.
