If you’re in the beginner phase of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild , odds are you’re feeling overwhelmed by the never-ending number of items for you to collect. With so many objects in Hyrule, there’s a lot of anxiety for new players about what items to keep and what items to sell. After all, there’s no worse feeling in Legend of Zelda: BotW than selling off a bunch of items only to encounter a side quest moments later asking for something you just had in your inventory. Never fear! We’re here to help with this beginner’s item guide to help you pick and choose among your inventory so you know what to keep for quests and upgrades down the road.
Beginner Item Guide: Ancient Screws, Ancient Cores, Ancient Shafts
You’ll find these by searching ruined Guardians or defeating them in battle (good luck!) You’ll want to hang onto them because they’re used for upgrading Link’s runes at the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab in Kakariko Village. Five ancient screws upgrade the sensor rune, five ancient shafts upgrade the bomb rune and five ancient cores upgrade the stasis rune. But don’t sell them after you make upgrades! Once you find Robbie at the Akkala Ancient Tech Lab these will also be used in the construction of various Guardian weapons.
Beginner Item Guide: Bokoblin Horn, Bokoblin Guts, Chuchu Jelly And Hyrule Bass
One of the new features in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the expanded outfits system for Link. Instead of having the standard red, green and blue suits there’s a bit more depth this time. Each outfit is separated into two or three parts (head, chest and legs) and each of those parts can be upgraded at the Great Fairy locations. With what, you ask? Well, for beginners the key things to hang on to early on are select monster parts. You need 15 total Bokoblin horn to upgrade the Hyrule Warrior outfit the first time, then another 15 to upgrade it once you find a second great fairy. You might also invest in the Soldier’s Outfit in Hateno Village, too, and to upgrade that you’ll need 15 Chuchu Jelly and 9 Bokoblin guts for the first upgrade, and the same amount again for the second. Hang on to the Hyrule bass, too. No spoilers, just trust me you’re going to want to have at least 10 in your inventory for an outfit you get from … someone special.
Beginner Item Guide: Luminous Stones And Flints
These are two items that are easy to get rid of. Luminous stones are tempting to sell and flints can be used to start fires for cooking, but it's worth holding onto at least ten of both for future sidequests that I won’t spoil here. But as you get started in this gigantic game make it a point to keep a cache of both in your inventory so you’re ready to cash in on those quests when you come across them.
