Valentine’s Day is not even a week past, but Love remains in the air. That’s because Netflix, the streaming service-turned-production company, has released a new original series titled, well… ya know - Love. I know - that was awful, but as Gillian Jacob’s character Britta from Community would say, let me finish! Jacobs is back in action with Netflix’s new comedy series produced by the awkward romance story king, Judd Apatow.
The early reviews for Love are in, and guess what - it bites! But like, in a good way. Currently, Love holds a 92 percent rating for season 1 on Rotten Tomatoes. The show may have not instigated widespread discussion on the Internet like Narcos or Master of None (yet), but the comedy is certainly favored by audiences. The unlikely tale of nice guy Gus (Paul Rust) and fiery booze addict Mickey (Jacobs) developing a relationship has struck a chord, and the show’s bingeability is substantial thanks to a 30 minute runtime and its lighthearted tone.
If you’ve already checked out Love, which premiered on Feb. 19, chances are that you finished the 10 episode season. And if you finished Love already, then you probably want to experience it even more. That’s the power it has. But don’t worry, this isn’t like the end of a relationship… it’s more like a temporary break, baby. Despite the show premiering less than a week ago, season 2 of Love is already on the way.
Netflix has so much confidence in Apatow’s vision that they ordered two full seasons of Love straight off the bat. This is pretty unusual - most shows have to make an impression on either audiences or critics to persuade a network to renew. In fact, Love is the only series that Netflix has handed a two season order to besides House of Cards, which was Netflix’s very first original series.
An article from Variety states that “Netflix has ordered 10 episodes for Love’s first season and 12 for the following season a year later. Sources said Netflix stepped up with the huge commitment out of its desire to have an original property from Apatow.”
So there it is. Love will never fade - at least for another year. The series will return for season 2 in 2017, likely around the same February release date. Stay tuned for more updates.
