Yesterday marked the official announcement of the first in a long line of projects between Chinese gaming giant NetEase and Marvel Entertainment.
The first project from said partnership comes in the form of a mobile title called MARVEL Super War. It is a free-to-play MOBA game, which is a staple in the mobile market, and has officially begun its closed beta testing phase for both Android and iOS users in Southeast Asia and India.
MARVEL Super War is a gathering of Marvel’s greatest superheroes and supervillains from across the franchise’s universe, all thrown into one epic colossal clash. These characters include members from some the best-known teams in the Marvel franchise, like the Avengers, the X-Men, Guardians of the Galaxy and so much more. Players can jump into MARVEL Super War and play as their favorite Marvel character going straight into combat, using their various abilities on the battlefield.
MARVEL Super War is being touted by NetEase and Marvel as offering a different experience from other mobile MOBA titles. Its main focus, according to the developers, is on fair combat and balanced gameplay, ditching the familiar rune-like system which is seen in most mobile MOBA titles, which can lead into very unfair situations. MARVEL Super War has overhauled mechanics, replacing the archaic rune system with a completely open and free buff system that’s only made available through playing and increasing your reputation and achievements. In shorter terms, there’s no pay-to-win here, and only skill and perseverance will see you through.
Of course, playing as Marvel characters lets you use their abilities in combat, presented in a unique utilization of everyone’s powers, be it hero or villain. Combos are encouraged, which can be chained by smart use of skills. Some characters, like Deadpool, can be used in both melee and ranged states, while a character like Black Panther has dashes and slashes to quickly move on the battlefield.
MARVEL Super War is now available to play in a closed beta state for the following countries: Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, and India. It is available on both iOS and Android devices, although the availability for each can differ from country to country.
