The mobile game Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is shutting down less than a year after it was launched following news that NetherRealm Studios was conducting mass layoffs.

The game was originally released in October 2023 but support for it is officially coming to an end. The developers have confirmed that Mortal Kombat: Onslaught will shut down in its anniversary month and will no longer be available for download starting on July 22, 2024.

Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is Shutting Down

Any player who is looking to get their hands on the game before it shuts down officially has a very limited time to do so. Mortal Kombat fans should download the game on the App Store or Google Play as soon as they can before it gets removed.

Ahead of the removal of Mortal Kombat: Onslaught from mobile stores, the game's official account on X, formerly known as Twitter, revealed a handful of dates that players should keep in mind, according to ComicBook.

While the mobile game will be officially shut down on October 21, 2024, it will be unavailable for download from the App Store and Google Play Store on July 22, 2024. Additionally, it noted that in-game purchases will be disabled on Aug. 23, 2024.

The announcement that Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is shutting down immediately sparked frustration among many fans of the franchise. There were some who clearly enjoyed the mobile game and were looking forward to it getting support and more content.

The recent layoffs at NetherRealm Studios are believed to have played a crucial role in the decision to shut down Mortal Kombat: Onslaught. The news that employees of the studio were being let go was spread on LinkedIn, said IGN.

Future Support

The developers revealed that they were being laid off as part of what seems to be the gutting of the company's mobile team. One of the affected workers said that NetherRealm's entire mobile team was shut down.

The affected team was responsible for working on live services for multiple titles, such as Mortal Kombat Mobile, Injustice 2, and Mortal Kombat: Onslaught. On the other hand, Warner Bros. also shared an update for Mortal Kombat Mobile and Injustice 2 Mobile.

It said that NetherRealm Studios will assure all players and fans of their commitment to the two games. The company said that the two titles will receive full support unlike Mortal Kombat: Onslaught.

Despite the assurance of Warner Bros., it remains unclear just how much support Mortal Kombat Mobile and Injustice 2 Mobile will be getting moving forward, according to GameRant.
