Eleven weeks into the second season of Mr. Robot and this go-round has been much more polarizing than the series’ debut season for various reasons, but the key one is the payoff… or lack thereof so far. While Mr. Robot Season 1 had the build-up to the 5/9 hack as the overarching storyline, individual episodes has smaller storylines wrapped up regularly (poor Shayla). As we enter the Mr. Robot Season 2 finale tonight (episode 12, eps2.9_pyth0n-pt2.p7z) there are plenty of questions. What’s real? Who survived the Dark Army attack? Are Mobley and Trenton OK?
The official description for the Mr. Robot Season 2 finale says "Angela makes an unexpected acquaintance; Darlene realizes she's in deep; and an old friend reveals all to Elliot.” This preview, coupled with the teaser and previous episodes gives us some solid ideas as to where the show ends up after Wednesday night.
'Mr. Robot' Season 2 Finale Predictions: Tyrell Is The New Mr. Robot
Since the end of last season, when Elliot woke up alone in the SUV following the 5/9 hack, we’ve been curious about what exactly happened and how Tyrell Wellick is involved. Up until the latest episode Tyrell has been not been visible, but that may not mean what’s occurring is not at his direction.
Earlier this season when Mr. Robot is explaining what happened to Tyrell, Elliot comes to the conclusion he used the gun from the popcorn machine to kill Tyrell. Under the impression Tyrell is dead, Elliot is more than shocked to see him when he enters the cab. Elliot, after screaming to the cab driver if he could see Tyrell, is unsure if he’s real. After the prison sequences this season and the Mr. Robot is dead reveal from season one, could the Mr. Robot Season 2 finale really be setting us up again?
Unfortunately, it looks that way right now. The evidence isn’t iron-clad but it’s there. For starters, the cab driver never looks or responds to Tyrell except that he begins to drive once Tyrell gives him the address. Even then, the driver only is looking at communicating with Elliot. After Elliott freaks out and they stop the car we see the two walk off and Tyrell quotes Casablanca and says “I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”
In the brief teaser for the Mr. Robot Season 2 final Tyrell is positioned the in same way Mr. Robot occasionally is during his interactions with Elliot. In the screenshot, seen below, Tyrell is behind Elliot on one shoulder, Mr. Robot on the other. We think this means Tyrell is a new voice, maybe Elliot’s bad conscious, to go along with Mr. Robot. Good vs. evil invisible voices isn’t the most intriguing storyline but it’s the most plausible one right now.
'Mr. Robot' Season 2 Finale Predictions: Dom’s Interviewee, Joanna Being Set-Up, Maybe It All Ties To the Washington Township
But what about the phone calls to Joanna, the gifts? Well, someone is calling her and there are only a couple people it could be. It’s not likely Elliot, he was in jail when some of the gifts and calls were received. If Tyrell is actually alive it could be him, but in the end it may very well end up being Scott Knowles. We haven’t seen much of him this season except for when he harshly denied Joanna Tyrell’s money owed. Tyrell is the No. 1 suspect for his wife’s death and he has reason to hate Joanna. Could he be trolling her all along? Is the location of the calls that Elliot uncovered from Knowles's apartment. We think so.
As for other pieces of the puzzle that remain unconnected, there’s not much to go on from the Dark Army and Angela’s storyline. At the end of episode 11, Angela has a long Blade Runner -esque conversation with White Rose, then tells her lawyer to stop calling her and forget about the voicemail that she left. Is this all connected to the Washington Township? We're not sure how yet but everyone is seemingly connected to that plant.
At the end of episode 10, the Dark Army shoots up the restaurant where Darlene and Cisco were eating just as Dom was walking in. Since that sudden scene we’ve only seen a bloody Dom being told to take it easy, but have heard nothing of the status of the other two, except when Dom asks to be the one to do the interview. Based on the Mr. Robot Season 2 finale description “Darlene realizes she's in deep,” we can assume she didn’t die in the attack and she’s the one Dom will be pressing hard against in the interrogation room. As for Mobley and Trenton’s whereabouts, they are either already dead or your guess is as good as ours.
“You ready to look at what we accomplished,” Tyrell asks Elliot in the teaser. Hopefully tonight we actually find out. The Mr. Robot Season 2 finale airs at 10 p.m. Wednesday night on USA.
