Games like NBA Jam and NBA Street gave gamers a more fun and casual alternative over the sim-style basketball from NBA 2K and NBA Live. Sometimes you want rad fire graphics coming from your basketball to show your unstoppable Mark Price from the Cleveland Cavaliers is in the zone. (Sidenote: Price and Brad Daugherty was the best combination in NBA Jam, just saying.)
Although the recently released 3on3 Freestyle was a fun alternative, it’s not a game licensed by the NBA and thus it’s missing an edge. While 3on3 Freestyle is a good game, a new playground game was announced this week that will include NBA players.
NBA Playgrounds is a new game that will feature both current and former NBA players in an arcade-playground setting. In the first trailer for NBA Playgrounds, you see Allen Iverson taking on Stephen Curry in a dream matchup that many would pay to see right now. The selling point of this game is the NBA Jam-like players’ bodies and the generous amount of special moves and dunks that can be done within the game.
The game was developed by Saber Interactive and according to Saber CEO Matt Karch, NBA Playgrounds will be easy enough for new players to just pick up and play, yet the game will have "a lot of depth for hardcore pros who’ve mastered their game." The game will be playable solo, along with support for local-multiplayer and online.
NBA Playgrounds will have a May release date and will be available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and the PC. The cost of the game will be $19.99.
