New Girl, the quirky sitcom in which Zooey Deschanel stars as the sole female roommate in a male-populated loft apartment, has been renewed for a sixth season by Fox. At this point, it’s a pretty ironic title given the longevity of the show, but not many complain as New Girl has been one of the best network television series over the past five years.
“Every network comedy should aspire to what Liz Meriwether is achieving in New Girl , with its bravura dialogue, inventive and witty performances by the talented cast and emotionally engaging storytelling,” said Fox Entertainment president David Madden. “The series is as creatively strong today as it ever was, we want to congratulate New Girl on reaching its milestone 100th episode and we can’t wait for the next subversive and hilarious chapter of these characters’ lives.”
New Girl is in the midst of its fifth season, which has featured special guest stars Megan Fox, Bill Burr and former main cast member Damon Wayans Jr. Season 5 has followed in the footsteps of the show’s previous strong seasons, earning positive reviews from the likes of A.V. Club, indieWIRE and ScreenRant. “Seeing Fox's fivesome back together after a long break is a refreshing experience for sitcom savants, but it may also be time for the band to break up,” wrote indieWIRE’s Ben Travers.
Is he right about New Girl ending its run? He’s certainly not wrong - most TV shows begin to peter out after four or five seasons, but New Girl will take its chances thanks to its solid writing and likeable cast. The show’s simple premise and sitcom set-up should provide the writing room enough material to sustain the jokes for another season or two.
Regardless of the outcome, reaching 100 episodes is no easy task. In fact, it’s the hallmark of any great television series, and with the streaming services closing in on the market, Fox and the rest of the networks should enjoy it while they can.
New Girl airs Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m. ET on Fox.
