New tips for this week’s Metal Gear Survive beta, published on the PlayStation Blog, offer a handful of new details on Konami’s upcoming MGSV spin-off. This week’s update only features a smattering of early game content, but it still paints a more complete picture of the Metal Gear Survive experience.
One of the most surprising revelations from this week’s beta advice is that Konami’s next Metal Gear will incorporate some elements of the tower defense genre. The weird crystal aliens from Survive’s alternate dimension will apparently attack your headquarters in waves. Those assaults must be defended by the player and (if desired) their allies. You’ll have to build fences and other fortifications on the fly, many of which will inevitably be destroyed by the invading hordes, and keep an eye on the radar to see which direction the next wave is expected to attack from. Players get a chance to rest, resupply and repair their base between waves. And supply drops, during and after incoming attacks, offer incentive to venture away from the Wormhole Digger when you have a spare moment.
The PS Blog update on Metal Gear Survive also includes additional information on the game’s staging area, an addition we previously compared to a similar setting in The Matrix. Well, it turns out Survive’s armory/training area is almost exactly like the infinite space Neo and Trinity visit near the end of the Wachowskis’ classic film. You can’t summon long rows of guns or upload new skillsets into your brain. But you can hang out with friends, fire off a few (hundred) rounds to get acquainted with the game’s firearms and test out the various gadgets available to your squad.
