Rumors for upcoming video games can be all over the place, and many are fake. However, citations by multiple sources, along with tons of extra information that seems plausible, makes some rumors stand out above others. That’s the case right now for a new Zelda game allegedly coming to the 3DS. However, Nintendo has yet to confirm (or deny) it.
One of the first times we heard about a new 3DS Zelda game was in a reddit post from Dec. 30 by user Nate869621. This post says Grezzo, the studio behind a bunch of other Zelda games including A Link Between Worlds, the 3DS port of Majora’s Mask and others, is working on a new game in the series. According to the post, the new Zelda game was supposed to have come out in 2017, but was delayed into 2018 because of Nintendo’s focus on Breath of the Wild. Additionally, the redditor claims the company will reveal the game soon, along with a new 2DS bundle. According to the post, Nintendo plans to release the game sometime in Q2 or early Q3 2018.
The reddit user claims the new Zelda game is inspired by the Game Boy game Link’s Awakening, but it isn’t an outright remake. If this game proves to be real, it will probably be set in the same location as Link’s Awakening, similar to how A Link Between Worlds was set in the same area as A Link To The Past.
Regarding the 3DS inspired a Link's Awakening game coming out this year. The team behind it is Grezzo who have handled many Zelda games for 3DS. A prime example is the Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D.

Along with the post, Marcus Sellars, a freelance Nintendo-focused writer at Nintendo Switch Network, Miketendo64 and others, revealed similar information on Twitter. Sellars doubles down on the Grezzo development, but doesn’t provide backing for the other rumors.
Interestingly, another tweet mentions the new game as having similarly “open” gameplay to Breath of the Wild. Based on the Twitter handle, it’s probably safe to assume Nate8696 is the same person as Nate869621 from the reddit post.
Nintendo has already mentioned this “open” approach to Zelda, lending support to the rumor. Back in April, Breath of the Wild director Eiji Aonuma said in an interview with Famitsu that he thinks “open air games will be the standard for Zelda” in the future.
As for when we’ll hear an announcement from Nintendo, that ties into another recent rumor about the company. Many online are speculating a Nintendo Direct will take place Jan. 11, and Nintendo will reveal this new Zelda game then. Nintendo hasn’t even mentioned the Direct, so if that doesn’t happen, all these other rumors will likely crumble with it.
