90s kids rejoice! The long-gestating rumor of a Nickelodeon movie is officially going down, as Paramount Pictures have brought in director Jared Hess to helm NickToons. The news comes by way of Deadline, who report that Hess - who you may know from cult classic Napoleon Dynamite - and his wife/writing partner Jarusha are penning a script for the studio. What a time to be alive!
The movie centers on an idea developed by Ali Mendes, a producer over at Disruption Entertainment. No word on what that idea actually features as of now, but Deadline compares the project to Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Me? I’d like to think of it as something more akin to the Avengers, which features a number of famous Marvel superheroes. After all, the report confirms that NickToons will star - at the very least - Rugrats, Ren & Stimpy, Rocko’s Modern Life, Aaahh! Real Monsters and The Angry Beavers. Every 90s kid will also want to see characters from the likes of Hey Arnold!, The Wild Thornberrys and Doug. Since Nickelodeon and Paramount seem to finally be listening to our requests, I’m feeling rather hopeful that we’ll see their inclusion in the NickToons movie.
In the past, Nickelodeon has maintained that whoever was handed the reigns of NickToons would not compromise the integrity of the characters. The personalities and backstories are expected to remain the same under Hess, so expect to see the same ol’ Tommy Pickles, Ren and Norbert Beaver.
Nickelodeon has been making itself very relevant again as of late. They also recently launched The Splat, a networking block exclusively dedicated to its classic 90s lineup. We’ll keep you updated once more information regarding NickToons is available.
