Nintendo had announced back in October that its first mobile app Miitomo is slated to arrive in March 2016. Following a couple months of radio silence, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kishima finally reiterated in Japanese newspaper Mainichi that the Miitomo release date is still on track for March.
It's not news per se, but it's important to note that Nintendo is keeping on track to enter into the realm of mobile apps and mobile gaming in the imminent future. Should Nintendo successfully create a sizable impact mobile app market, then we should not only expect Nintendo to continue with the launch of many of its beloved gaming franchises in mobile form, but also witness more gaming developers entering the market as well.
Nintendo's latest Miitomo app isn't actually a game. Instead, it's a new social media app that utilizes Miis, a user's Avatar that apparently doubles as an animated emoji, as a line of communication.
"Communicating with friends who actually look like your friends in real life is a distinctly different feeling from text-based communication," said Isao Moriyasu, CEO of Nintendo's partner DeNA.
