Viking-lore based real-time strategy game Northgard, will be launching in late September for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, publisher Merge Games and developer Shiro Games announced.
Launched initially for the PC via Steam, Northgard is a strategy game that revolves around Norse mythology in which you control a clan of Vikings amidst a conflict, with hopes to come out on top and control a mysterious newfound continent: the titular Northgard.
The game gives you control over a group of some of the boldest Northmen, looking to make their mark on these foreign shores. Bring fame to your Clan and write history through prowess in battle, cunning in trading, or assimilation through devotion to the Gods. Aside from your enemy Clans, you need to survive the dire wolves and the harshest winters to lay claim to the riches of Northgard. As a real-time strategy game, Northgard requires you to build a settlement and manage your resources carefully to survive the unforgiving winters and outlast your foes. You start off by assigning your vikings to various jobs (Farmer, Warrior, Sailor, Loremaster, etc.), and expand by discovering new territories that offer unique strategic advantages.
Northgard, similar to genre heavyweight Total War, allows victory through multiple approaches. If Total War has Military, Economic, and Cultural victories you can achieve, in Northgard, you can meet victory conditions such as Conquest, Fame, Lore, and Trading. You can either play through the story mode, Rig’s Saga, wherein players journey through Northgard to avenge your father’s assassination, only to find out that there are greater threats you are about to meet. Multiplayer is also available through dedicated servers if you think you have what it takes to reach the final Norse God rank, and if going through the single-player campaign is more your speed, there are six clans you can choose from, each with their own unique way of approaching the game,
Northgard for console will provide an optimized control scheme, giving as much command with a gamepad or Joy-con as PC players have with a keyboard and mouse. Its release will include all content currently found in the PC version, including the Ragnarok and Relics updates. Its launch date is scheduled for September 26, and we should expect both physical and digital copies to be available.
Also, a tabletop game titled Northgard: Uncharted Lands has been announced by Shiro Games as well. Expect more details for all of Northgard’s upcoming projects, as well as upcoming co-op action survival game Darksburg to be unveiled at gamescom 2019 from August 20 to 24.
