Old Time Hockey is a new game made for old school hockey fans. The giant in hockey games is EA Sports’ NHL franchise with NHL 17 praised by fans and critics alike. And while Old School Hockey won’t compete in sales against NHL 17 , it will definitely fill a niche that games like Blades of Steel filled for hockey fans years ago.
This week, V7 Entertainment announced that Old Time Hockey would be released on March 28 for the PlayStation 4 and PC via Steam as a digital purchase. A Xbox One release is set for sometime in Q2 (April-June), along with a Nintendo Switch release around the same time. If the release date of March 28 looks familiar, it's because it's also the release date for MLB The Show 17 .
What makes Old Time Hockey an interesting game is that it is a departure from many of the simulation style games that are popular today. This is the first arcade-style hockey since EA Sports released 3-on-3 NHL Arcade in 2009, which did not sell very well. V7 Entertainment is hoping that a game that features fictional teams and a different style of play could be the catalyst for sports gaming fans to give Old Time Hockey a try. It also helps that the game has a $12 price point, which increases the interest of fans that do not want to spend $60 on a single game.
For a brief synopsis of what Old Time Hockey is, here is what V7 Entertainment said about the game.
“Experience hockey the way it was meant to be played in this old school arcade style hockey game where blood on the ice is just another day at the rink. 70s afros, big moustaches, no helmets, dirty hits, bench-clearing brawls, goalie fights, stick fights, ref abuse and locker room language – that's Old Time Hockey. Players in this league live by one simple rule - Never look at the puck, just take the body. Timely hits are crucial in this dangerous sport where getting on fire is the difference between winning and losing.”
