Overwatch is finally live, but is currently missing something very important: ranked play. How am I supposed to prove I’m better at the game then someone else without an actual ranking to back me up? It may not be here yet, but it is coming, according to lead game designer Jeff Kaplan.
In a Facebook Q and A, Kaplan says that ranked play will be coming in a big content update in mid to late June that will feature competitive mode. In the video, Kaplan says: “Competitive mode is the current focus of the Overwatch team, and it's the most important thing for us to add to the game right now.”
Blizzard decided to remove it from the game, after players started to notice some of the problems in competitive mode. The biggest problem was that it was matching low-skill players with much more highly skilled ones, causing lopsided fights. If you put a top-tier player up against four weaker ones, the top-tier player will dominate in the skill based game that is Overwatch.
Ranked modes are extremely important for a games continued growth and success. Some people only play casually, while others only queue up to grind ranked games to prove they are the best. I can’t remember the last time I played a normal game in League of Legends when ranked queues were up. I need to grind LP and prove I am at least better than those numbskulls on the other team.
