The underwater exploration game The Great Ocean is finally coming to PC via Steam, scheduled sometime later this year. A version for the Oculus Quest 2 was first released in 2022.
For the PC-VR version, players can look forward to a bigger and better game, with a lot more content along with additional options. It goes without saying that this upcoming version is developed specifically for PC.
The Great Ocean lets players have an adventure in the earth’s oceans and explore different fascinating areas like the Galapagos, the Arctic, or the Deep Sea. Players get the chance to swim with majestic whales, sea turtles, and even sharks. They can even upgrade tools and discover sunken battleships from World War 2 or those strange creatures of the deep.
The game offers missions in each level based on exploration and discovery. Missions have players take action and help the underwater world through:
- Freeing or healing fish.
- Building new coral reefs.
- Removing trash.
- Gathering evidence for crimes against Ocean Health.
The game has hours of gameplay with personal story, great interaction, and challenging quests. Game features include:
- Solve underwater quests.
- Explore the Galapagos Islands.
- Go whale diving in the Arctic.
- Keep the ocean clean.
- Discover new marine species.
- Search famous wrecks.
- Assist researchers.
- Adopt fish and corals and support real NGOs.
- Dive in stunning coral reefs in Cozumel Island.
A Positive Impact
Helping the ocean isn't limited to the game. Players get the chance to have a positive impact by supporting different NGOs that collaborated in the game’s development. One of these is rrreefs, a ETH Zurich Spin-off. This organization is founded and run by women who are using science, art, and education. This is the same group responsible for the award-winning modular system of 3D-printed rrreef bricks, which are made with pure clay.
Another one is the non-profit foundation called Mare Nostrum. It was established in Quito, Ecuador, and works to create practical and lasting solutions for the protection of the oceans. Its focus includes marine pollution, overfishing, and climate change. Right now, they're conducting groundbreaking research on utilizing new technology to lower bycatch of sea turtles.
