The unfounded PlayStation 4.5 news is becoming as rampant as the Nintendo NX rumors, but a new Wall Street Journal suggests the existence of this 4K console is becoming more likely.
The WSJ report states that Sony plans to sell a more powerful version of the PS4 (what many are calling the PlayStation 4.5 ) to handle higher-end game experiences, like virtual reality.
However, the introduction of the new console won’t cut back production of the popular PS4 machine, which has sold more than 36 million units worldwide to date.
The report reassures PS4 owners that while they may consider upgrading to the 4.5 to take advantage of the better graphics, it won’t be absolutely necessary, as both consoles will have the same software catalog.
The PS4.5 will launch before the October release of the PlayStation VR headset , according to the report. The upgraded console is reportedly going to provide more power for running the PlayStation VR, whose main competitors, the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive, are designed to work with high-end computers.
A Sony spokesman declined to comment when WSJ approached them about its findings.
But the PS4.5 rumors/news have come into focus after Kotaku first reported Sony was planning on launching a new console. In the Kotaku report, developers who have spoken with Sony revealed the company’s plans.
Based on conversations with developers who have spoken with Sony, this ‘PS4.5’ will include an upgraded GPU both to support high-end 4K resolution for games and add more processing power that can enhance the games supported by PlayStation VR, the headset Sony will launch this fall. It’s unclear if ‘PS4.5’ is an official name or just a nickname that developers have been using. One developer jokingly called it the ‘PS4K’ while telling me about the device.
So what do you think of the WSJ report on the PS4.5? Will you upgrade to the 4.5 or stick with the PS4? Let us know in the comments section below.
