Sony might be working on a more powerful version of its PlayStation 4, Kotaku reports. It’s unclear if the rumored PlayStation 4.5 or PS4.5 will be a software update or a whoe new device. However, the console will allegedly run games at 4K resolution, which is about four times the pixel size of 1080p, the current standard for PS4 titles. Kotaku reports the upgrade will also enhance players’ VR experience:
Based on conversations with developers who have spoken with Sony, this ‘PS4.5’ will include an upgraded GPU both to support high-end 4K resolution for games and add more processing power that can enhance the games supported by PlayStation VR, the headset Sony will launch this fall. It’s unclear if ‘PS4.5’ is an official name or just a nickname that developers have been using. One developer jokingly called it the ‘PS4K’ while telling me about the device.
According to Kotaku, there will be a price hike if Sony goes through with creating an upgraded PS4 console. The PS4.5 would likely retail for $400, with the PS4 price staying at $350. Sony has yet to comment on the legitimacy of the PS4.5 rumors.
However, this could potentially change the landscape of gaming. There’s always been a debate about console vs. PC gaming, and Sony's latest venture could convert PC gamers over to the dark side. Building your own gaming PC can get prohibitively expensive, so if Sony can give players “PC quality” on its console, they will definitely see an increase in sales.
