Bryan Cranston is set to play Zordon, the disembodied head and leader of the Power Rangers. The casting has raised many questions and thankfully Cranston sat down with Entertainment Tonight to talk about his portrayal of Zordon and his role in the upcoming reboot.
First off, Cranston revealed that his portrayal of Zordon will be motion capture and “a lot of CGI-work.” Fans expecting to see Cranston’s head floating in a tube may not get exactly that but it does lead to some interesting possibilities.
As for how Zordon becomes trapped in the Power Rangers Command Center, you’d have to go back to 1993’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, where Zordon tells the first Rangers that Rita Repulsa (played by Elizabeth Banks in the new film) trapped him in a time warp.
The plot point seems to be sticking in the reboot, but Cranston is really talking the man behind the floating head.
“The tenant of that storyline is that this a real person who is trapped in this etherworld and it becomes this in-the-wall so to speak of [the command center],” said Cranston. “He still has a heart and mind, but an agenda that he's got to get these five Power Rangers to defend the earth or else everyone they know will be killed.”
His agenda is to stop Rita Repulsa from taking over the Earth, and the new teenagers with attitude will have their hands full.
Becky G, RJ Cyler, Naomi Scott, Ludi Lin and Dacre Montgomery are set to play Trini, Billy, Kimberly, Zack and Jason, respectively.
The new Power Rangers movie is set to release in 2017.
