You can take on alien abilities in Bethesda’s upcoming game Prey, but it’ll cost you.
The latest trailer for Prey shows off the different powers players can acquire throughout the game. You can customize Morgan Yu by taking advantage of the neuromod, an implant that allows you to learn different skills. It works by injecting an implant through the eye, which subsequently makes its way to the brain.
We squirm just thinking about a needle going into our eye, we don’t know how we’ll feel when we watch Yu have to do it over and over again.
Anyway, the powers are broken up into two categories: Human and Alien. The human skills include things like upgrading your hacking skills or giving you the ability to jump higher. You acquire the Alien skills by scanning the Typhon you encounter on Talos I. For example, if you scan a Mimic, you’ll be able to acquire its ability to transform into objects. You can sneak your way into places by disguising yourself as a coffee cup.
But taking on Alien abilities comes at a price. The more Alien abilities you acquire, the more likely the safeguards placed in Talos I will turn against you. You’ll find your fighting Typhons and things like turrets meant to kill the aliens onboard.
It seems like a small price to pay to be able to start fires with your mind, but the game won’t force you to become inhuman. You can go through the game without acquiring Alien powers if you choose. There’s more than enough Human powers to keep you going.
