In a noticeably slow week for new video game releases, Bethesda’s Rage 2 managed to earn a top spot in the UK Charts, finally ending Days Gone’s reign at three consecutive weeks.
While this news is good all around for Bethesda and developer id, the sequel to 2011’s Rage still sold fewer copies than the original, managing only a quarter of physical sales compared to what the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and the PC managed back then. All of this was managed despite Rage actually debuting lower on the UK Chart than Rage 2 when it first debuted, trailing behind FIFA 12 back in October 2011.
While this may seem like a disappointing figure overall, it’s best to remember that digital sales weren’t as prevalent then compared to now. In fact, digital downloading contributes to about half of the actual sales for console games in the UK, which would mean that despite the facts presented, it’s still a pretty good deal overall for Rage 2. It should be noted, however, that Bethesda is one of the few remaining video game publishers that refuses to share their digital sales.
Most of Rage 2’s physical sales in the UK came from the PlayStation 4, which accounted for 57 percent. Xbox One sales followed suit with 38 percent, with the PC platform dead last at about 5 percent. It should be noted that a majority of PC sales would have most likely came from Steam or other digital means.
In other positions at the chart, A Plague Tale: Innocence managed to break through the number 9 spot. The action-adventure title from Focus Home Interactive and Asobo Studios is currently my favorite release of the year, and I’m really glad to see that it’s getting a lot of love from players. Beyond the top ten games we have the remastered version of Sniper Elite V2, which debuted at number 13. Last week’s newest release, Saints Row: The Third - The Full Package for the Nintendo Switch dropped from number 15 to number 38.
