The iDigitalTimes office is currently riven with controversy over the actual color of Rey’s lightsaber in the first Star Wars: The Last Jedi trailer. But, full disclosure, this post is thoroughly in the “blue” camp. You green lightsaber people are freakin’ nuts.
If you’re unfamiliar with the wide world of lightsaber pedantry, congratulations, you may have a healthy relationship to pop culture. But while most people enjoy the duel component of the lightsaber duels, there’s a significant contingent who have closely tracked the colors and configurations of various Jedi and Sith laser swords in an effort to concoct grand unified theories about this or that. And the brand new Star Wars: The Last Jedi trailer offers a whole new battleground for this unique strain of nerdery, thanks to one super wide shot that may be a little ambiguous as to exactly whose lightsaber Rey is holding.
In case you haven’t watched it a half dozen times already, the trailer for The Last Jedi is predominantly about Rey’s training on Ahch-To, the site of the first Jedi Temple, where Rey found Luke at the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. That movie ends with Rey holding out to Luke the blue lightsaber once owned by Anakin Skywalker. It’s the same lightsaber Obi-Wan Kenobi gave to Luke Skywalker in the first Star Wars (I’ll see you in hell before calling it A New Hope). Luke lost it above Bespin after Darth Vader cut off his hand, replacing it with a green lightsaber (of his own construction) in Return of the Jedi.
But while this is probably Anakin’s blue lightsaber:
What about this:
It’s a super wide shot, set against a blue ocean background, of Rey training. This seems uncontroversial to me: she’s training with Anakin’s blue lightsaber. But what do I know, I thought that damn dress (you know the one) was gold. And now people are coming out of the woodwork, certain Rey is training with a green lightsaber, even fellow Digi writers I had believed sane up to this moment.
People are even digging up old Episode 8 rumors (that smell distinctly of bantha poodoo to me) to claim that Rey builds her own green lightsaber.
So, what do you think? Blue or green?
My personal theory is that Luke tossed his green lightsaber in the drink after Kylo and his Knights of Ren destroyed his Jedi temple and killed all his padawans (seen briefly in flashback in The Force Awakens and one or two shots of this trailer). He no longer wishes to be a Jedi and no longer fights with the weapon of a Jedi.
