This is thin, very thin, but it’s rumored that the Rick and Morty Season 3 premiere episode will be an hour long, rather than the standard 22-minute cartoon episode.
There’s zero official confirmation of the Season 3 premiere’s runtime. Instead, it comes from IMDb, a reliably unreliable source of rumors. Here’s a pic:
We’ve reached out to Rick and Morty social media accounts, but have yet to hear a denial or confirmation that Season 3 will begin with the longest Rick and Morty story yet.
If the rumor proves true, the premiere episode will presumably explain how Rick breaks out of Galactic Federation prison, where he ended Season 2. While this particular rumor is thinly sourced, we think we know a surprising amount about the new landscape in Rick and Morty Season 3, including the possibility that a newly empowered Jerry Smith might stand in the way of Rick’s release in prison. Jerry might even be the antagonist of this theoretical hour-long Rick and Morty special.

Other disclosures from people who work on Rick and Morty (including co-creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon) promise that Rick won’t be imprisoned for long. Two full episodes of Season 3 will grapple with Rick’s alcoholism, Harmon said at San Diego Comic-Con. We suspect a return to the Citadel of Ricks and an episode about transforming into a pickle (somehow). Season 3 is also expected to have a more serial throughline than previous Rick and Morty seasons, which means no Interdimensional Cable episode. Oh, and Season 3 will also undermine our country with socialism.
There’s still no release date for Rick and Morty Season 3. We may be willing to spread this silly rumor, but there’s yet to be a premiere date rumor worth a damn. It’ll get here when it gets here.
