Rick and Morty writer and producer Ryan Ridley, who we last heard from explaining the origin story behind Season 2 episode “Total Rickall,” has highlighted a single video out of the endless hours of YouTube pop culture commentary. The video, from New Rockstars, is of the “trailer breakdown” variety, going through the footage shot-by-shot to suss out every little detail. You’ve seen videos like this before, but it’s Ridley’s imprimatur that makes this interesting. Though Ridley doesn’t say anything about whether or not its analysis is right, the endorsement has our attention.
So what kind of spoilers can be found in the Rick and Morty Season 3 trailer?
Before we dive into any spoilers, give the trailer another watch:
The plot lines highlighted in the trailer seem to come from at least six episodes, which means we’re likely seeing clips from approximately half of the season’s 14 episodes. Skipping over the footage from the pilot, the video identifies several episode plotlines.
Pickle Rick - Rick and Morty co-creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland have talked about this episode on multiple occasions, including at Comic-Con 2016. Rick turns himself into a pickle and makes a mechsuit out of rat corpses.
Mad Max: Summer Road - No one’s watching the trailer and not spotting the obvious Mad Max: Fury Road parody.
JurasRick World - Rick and Jerry hang out together at a theme park. But things go wrong and they find themselves in the surrounding jungle, running from giant monsters.
The Vindicators: Infinity Rick - This one’s spread all over quick shots in the trailer. It appears to be a parody of the Marvel cinematic universe.
Slime - Who knows what’s going on in this episode, but there’s a lot of footage in the trailer of slime versions of Rick and Morty.
Within the context of these episodes, New Rockstars picked out a lot of interesting details. Some of them could potentially be major spoilers for specific episodes. Oh well.
It takes sharp eyes to notice, for example, that Rick may not actually appear at all in the episode where he teams up with Jerry. Instead, Rick might have sent a robot Rick to hang out with his estranged former son-in-law (at the end of the Season 3 pilot Jerry and Beth are heading toward a divorce). Not only does this Rick have embedded Robocop guns, but also doesn’t die after getting shot in the heart. Westworld could be another satirical target of this episode.
Another great catch in the video is Morty’s apparent membership in The Vindicators. Take a looksie, Morty has on their uniform:
There are also a number of easter eggs and well-considered guesses in the video, ranging from a dead Thanos lookalike to the apparent addition of a Wilson from Home Improvement.
“Welcome to the darkest year of our adventures,” Rick said at the end of the first episode of Season 3. This trailer certainly lives up to the promise. It’s loaded with guts and gore. And while it spoils a fair amount of the plotlines, it looks like there are plenty of surprises still in store. Why is Beth transforming Summer into a giant? Who is Summer’s teched-out clone? Where did Morty get the giant arm? The answers begin when Rick and Morty Season 3 officially debuts July 30.
