If you are one of the millions of PC gamers haven’t played Rocket League, the latest “soccer with cars” project from Psyonix, there aren’t going to be many better opportunities to get some free hands-on time with the game than the current free weekend trial on Steam.
Sure, free weekends aren’t exactly new to the Steam calendar. In fact, ignoring the cornucopia of mediocre free-to-play titles infesting Valve’s digital marketplace, there’s something free to play on Steam just about every weekend. But few of those free weekend periods are as exciting as this weekend’s Rocket League trial. For starters, the game isn’t exactly hurting for players as-is, having crossed the 12 million user mark in less than 12 months. But, far more importantly, Rocket League was easily one of the most enjoyable games to debut in 2015. So it’s not like the free period is a last-ditch effort to round up a decent-sized user base.
In addition to letting people play Rocket League free-of-charge, Psyonix has also temporarily slashed the price of the base game and all of its downloadable content. Those interested in buying a copy of Rocket League can currently pick up a Steam key for $11.99 (instead of the usual $19.99) and a 20 percent discount has been applied to the various Rocket League add-ons, like the Revenge of the Battle-Cars car pack, until Monday morning. Those discounts even extend to Rocket League’s licensed content, like the Delorean from Back to the Future and the Batmobile from Batman v Superman.
