After half a century, the Rolling Stones are still relevant, as demonstrated by their historic sold-out concert in Cuba several weeks ago. Now, the legendary band is keeping the momentum moving with the announcement of a new studio album, which guitarist Ronnie Wood says will release later “this year.”
“We went in to cut some new songs, which we did,” Wood told The Associated Press. “But we got on a blues streak. We cut 11 blues in two days.”
The Rolling Stones are one of the most influential rock bands of all time, which, naturally, has rubbed off on many of their contemporary counterparts. But even then, the storied group plans to pay homage to those who came before then. Wood says that the new album will feature “extremely great cover versions” of artists including Howlin’ Wolf and Little Walter.
Guitarist Keith Richards also confirmed the new album’s release at the Stones’ “Exibitionism” exhibit at the Saatchi Gallery in London. His words were cryptic, but decisive: “There’s one coming. I can’t say no more. My lips are sealed.”
The new album marks the first Rolling Stones record in over a decade. As with the rest of the band’s discography, 2005’s A Bigger Bang was lauded by critics, scoring a 73 on Metacritic - indicating generally favorable reviews. Let’s hope the next album is just as successful.
