Hopoo Games’ hit Early Access title Risk of Rain 2 has, for the most part, overtaken most of my planned activities during the weekend. The game’s roguelike elements basically mean that you get thrown into relatively new experiences each and every time, and the game’s very challenging curve at higher difficulties is a blast to play, especially with friends.
It’s no wonder that the title, even though still in Early Access on Steam, has sold more than a million copies in its first month alone. It’s also helped by the fact that Risk of Rain 2 is just a 3D version of Hopoo Games’ first title, Risk of Rain; there’s already a lot of good will made from existing players in its predecessor, and Hopoo capitalized on this by just adding another dimension and polishing most of the gameplay in the resulting move to 3D.
Of course, PC owners so far are the only ones to enjoy this title, although that may soon change if a rumored listing is to be believed. Following last September, when the original Risk of Rain was released on the Nintendo Switch eShop, it now appears that Risk of Rain 2 may follow suit.
The leak/rumor comes from a recent rating by the USK, which is Germany’s classification board. This eventually circles back to the rumored data mine from the PC’s files referencing the Nintendo Switch – from mentions of a handheld mode, Joy-Cons to even something like Pro Controller support. In the meantime, check out a photo from the USK rating below, courtesy of Nintendo Life.
As far as rumors go, this one basically just needs confirmation. Risk of Rain 2 on the Switch sound right up my alley, as the game plays amazingly with a controller. The graphics don't look that demanding either, and it’s a safe bet to see it running on a lower resolution for the handheld with very minimal downgrades and at a stable framerate.
I do, however, have some misgivings, as Risk of Rain 2, no matter how good it is right now, is still lacking in content as it is in Early Access. It’s a questionable move to port a game when it’s not even fully finished and released yet, although I do get it if some people would beg to differ. I’d have just preferred if it Hopoo actually focused on finishing the game on its original platform right now before porting it to every other platform, which could in the end minimize all the additional work they now have to do.
In any case, if you want to check it out for yourself right now, Risk of Rain 2 is available to play on PC via Steam.
