One of the best FPS games of the last decade wasn’t exactly the biggest hit for EA. Titanfall 2 was released back in 2016 and it received critical acclaim from both fans and critics. However, the title became the victim of a bad release window. TF2 was released between EA’s own Battlefield 1 and Activision’s Call of Duty Infinite Warfare. That’s not exactly the best time to release a game.
Titanfall 2 only sold four million copies, whereas EA expected it to sell nine to ten million. Maybe that’s why we haven’t heard about a sequel. Respawn Entertainment then shifted their focus and gave us a free Battle Royale game, Apex Legends, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Both of these games received praise from fans and reviewers.
There is still some hope for Titanfall though. According to recent rumors, Titanfall 3 is currently in development at Respawn Entertainment. The claim was made by well-known Apex Legends dataminer Biast12 (Tobias). Titanfall 3 was also listed by Instant Gaming with a 2021 release.
The dataminer's previous claims about Apex Legends have been accurate. However, the chances of this leak being true aren't the best. Respawn has previously stated that they are not working on a Titanfall sequel. We do know that currently, Respawn is working on more Apex Legends content and a Star Wars Jedi sequel. They are also going to release a VR title called Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond on December 11. So, we know that the developers have been busy. It doesn’t seem likely that they have time to work on another full AAA project. However, a man can only hope.
Titanfall 2's recent release on Steam did boost the game’s previously dead player-base. However, it already has been heavily declining. EA could try keep the players interested in TF2 by making the game free-to-play. That might be a smart move if Titanfall 3 is actually in development.
