The Samsung Galaxy S7 and LG G5 are two of the latest 2016 flagships, which launched at Mobile World Congress this week touting always on displays as a new stand out feature.
The devices sport large batteries to support displays, which constantly show the time and date and notifications. However, active display isn’t all that new, especially for users of Motorola devices.
Several Motorola smartphones including the in the Moto X and Moto G lines feature Active Display or Moto Display, as it is called on more recent devices. The feature similarly displays at-a-glance information on the idle screen of a handset. Unlike Samsung and LG’s feature, Moto Display is not constant and pulses in an out of view. Users can also interact with the screen to display previews of messages or emails, all while the screen remains off.
iDigitalTimes asked executives their thoughts on the always on display feature on the Galaxy S7 and LG G5 and Motorola CMO Adrienne Hayes inferred that the market will likely now start to see more devices with features like always on display and active display, now that several top players use similar software.
“The innovation in mobile has still been fairly incremental. We’ve done our best to innovate and deliver but there’s still probably a big leap coming, versus the step changes we’ve seen,” Hayes said.
Lenovo announced several devices including the Vibe K5 and the Vibe K5 Plus at MWC earlier this week; however, the company says consumers can expect more from Moto end later in the year.
