Splatoon has been a wild success for Nintendo, so it’s only natural to start asking questions about Splatoon 2 and the future of the IP—whether it’s on the Wii U, the Nintendo 3DS or the Nintendo NX. Splatoon is Nintendo’s first major game that focused primarily on online multiplayer, so it was a big risk—as producer Hisashi Nogami recently told GamesMaster (subscription required; via Nintendolife). Thankfully, the game paid off big. It has sold over 4 million units worldwide, and is the sixth bestselling title on Wii U, according to Nintendo. Not bad for a title that’s been out for less than a year. So how about that sequel?
Splatoon 2 Is Inevitable, Eventually
In the GamesMaster interview, which sadly isn’t available online, producer Nogami touched very briefly on the subject of Splatoon’s future. Don’t get too excited, though: He basically hedged. According to Nintendo Everything, when asked about the subject of a sequel, Nogami said, “We want to raise this new IP with care, so maybe we’ll get a chance to make it happen if players support us.” That’s classic Nintendo demurring right there.
But with more than 4 million copies sold—especially impressive for a totally new IP on a system with a relatively small total base—Splatoon definitely has a future. It’s just a question of time and platform. Indeed, it’s not surprising that Nintendo won’t discuss the future of its newest series just yet. Splatoon was still getting new content as recently as January, and that may not even be the end of it. As Nintendo Everything reported, although the official end of content updates has already arrived, the company may still have other plans for the game in the future. And that’s reasonable too: Splatoon is still very popular, so Nintendo should keep the current fanbase as excited as possible for as long as it can.
As for the future of Splatoon, possibility abounds—even though mum is the word right now. After all, the Nintendo NX is just around the corner, and the New Nintendo 3DS still needs new games. And, of course, the company has pledged to continue supporting the Wii U even after the Nintendo NX release. Any of those systems would be ripe and ready for the appearance of Splatoon 2. The only questions are which one it’ll be—and when.
